نویسنده
چکیده
We argue that the presence of water vapor in the circumstellar outflow of a carbon-rich AGB star is potentially a distinctive signature of extra-solar cometary systems. Detailed models show that at suitable distances from the star, water ice can survive well into the carbon-rich AGB phase; water vapor abundances as large as 10 could result from the vaporization of a collection of orbiting icy bodies with a total mass comparable to what might have been originally present in the solar system’s Kuiper Belt. In particular, the recently-reported detection by the Submillimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite of water vapor in the circumstellar outflow of IRC+10216 can be explained if ∼ 10 Earth masses of ice is present at a distance ∼ 300 AU from that carbon-rich star. Future observations with the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO, formerly known as FIRST) will facilitate sensitive multi-transition observations of water, yielding line ratios that can establish the radial distribution of water vapor in IRC+10216. The greater sensitivity of HSO will also allow searches for water vapor to be carried out in a much larger sample of carbon-rich AGB stars. We report the detection of the 1665 and 1667MHz main lines of OH (hydroxyl) and upper limits on the 1612MHz satellite line of OH towards the carbonrich AGB star, IRC+10216. We find a beam averaged fractional abundance x(OH) ∼ 4 × 10. This detection supports the identification by Melnick et al. (2001) of the 110−101 transition of water vapor with a 556.936GHz emission feature detected towards IR...

The chemical compositions of the C-rich pAGB stars IRAS 05113+1347 and IRAS 22272+5424 are determined from high-resolution optical spectra using standard LTE model atmosphere-based techniques. The stars are C, N, and s-process enriched suggesting efficient operation of the third-dredge up in the AGB star following a first dredge-up that increased the N abundance. Lithium is present with an abun...

We report the detection of H2CO (formaldehyde) around the carbon-rich AGB star, IRC+10216. We find a fractional abundance with respect to molecular hydrogen of x(H2CO) = 1.3 +1.5 −0.8 × 10 . This corresponds to a formaldehyde abundance with respect to water vapor of x(H2CO)/x(H2O) = (1.1±0.2)×10 , in line with the formaldehyde abundances found in Solar System comets, and indicates that the puta...

New measurements of neutron-capture elements are presented for two very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] ∼ −3). One (LP 625-44) has an s-process signature believed to be due to mass transfer from a now-extinct metal-poor AGB companion, and the second (CS 22897-008) is one of a number of very metal-poor stars having high [Sr/Ba] ratios which is not expected from the r-process. In the sprocess star, many...

1.1 Introduction Carbon stars are tracers of the intermediate age population in galaxies. Either they are currently undergoing third dredge-up on the (Thermal-Pulsing) Asymp-totic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) – the cool and luminous N-type carbon stars (or the " infrared carbon stars " , when they are significantly reddened by circumstel-lar dust through mass-loss) –, or have been enriched with carbon...
